Zanesville Regional

The Zanesville Regional begins this Saturday! Livonia and Youngstown square off at 4:00 pm at Gant Municipal Stadium (click here for a location map), with host Zanesville and Lansing playing at 7:30 pm. This is the same line-up as the 2007 Zanesville Regional, which saw the Michigan Rams of Livonia beat all 3 teams in consecutive games, including a 7-3 victory over Zanesville in the champioship. This year, however, a new team will represent the Livonia franchise and look to advance to their first national tournament.

LANSING LIVONIA YOUNGSTOWN ZANESVILLE

Last year, newcomer Toledo swept through the Zanesville Regional on their way to an impressive 3-2 national tournament record. This year, the regional features a pair of Top 8 teams from the 2009 tournament: Lansing and Zanesville.

Host Zanesville will again be represented by the Junior Pioneers. In 2009, the Pioneers were mercy-ruled on opening night 13-0 to Johnstown. They appeared headed for a quick exit against Schenectady, but the New Yorkers walked in Zanesville's first run of the tournament and gave the Pioneers life. They went on to win the game 4-2 and then defeated Buffalo 6-4 later that day. The Pioneers were eliminated by Toledo, whom they lost to twice in the regional.

Carl's Supermarket of Lansing went 2-2 last year with victories against Elk County and Youngstown. They were the franchises' first national tournament wins since 2005.

Youngstown has a new sponsor and new team name this season: the Youngstown Glaciers. Bob Mingo's club was runner-up in 1990 with a 4-2 record, and also finished 5th in 1994. However the eastern Ohioans have struggled since then, winning just 9 games in their previous 12 tournament appearances. That includes a 3-2 mark in 2002 while sponsored by Jolly Joe's.

The biggest news heading into the Zanesville Regional is the new representative for Livonia. Since 2004, Rick Berryman's Michigan Rams have represented Livonia in the national tournament, posting 10 wins in 6 tournaments including a 4th place finished in 2005. This season, however, the Rams were overtaken in the Michigan Premier Collegiate League by Coach's Corner, who will represent the franchise in Zanesville.
