The original Point Stadium stood on the same spot as the
current Point Stadium.
The original Point Stadium was built in 1927 and was home to
many
professional teams, most recently the Johnstown Johnnies. Its name
comes from the fact
that it sits at the confluence of the Stonycreek, Little Conemaugh, and
Conemaugh Rivers. Famous ballplayers such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig,
Jackie Robinson, Frank and Joe Torre, and Ken Griffey, Jr. have all
played games at the Point. In 2000 and 2005, the Johnstown
Steal/Johnnies won the
Frontier League playoff championship at the Point Stadium. Point
Stadium was also the second stadium in the country to have lights for
night games. Additionally, the stadium has been host to many high
school football games, concerts, and was used in the filming of the
movie "All The Right Moves" starring Tom Cruise.
The grandstand behind home plate was built with balcony seating, but
was shut down for safety reasons in the 1930s. The first level of the
grandstand remained open and would fill up with the rest of the stadium
during Opening Night. The concourse traveled in front of the seating
areas, which is why the new Point Stadium features a similar seating
arrangement.
