Wednesday Afternoon Scores
August 10, 2011 - Here are scores from Wednesday afternoon.
Baltimore 14 - New Orleans 2 (7-innings)
The battle of the tournament favorites opened with Baltimore's Harry Slade hitting a triple. Joe Harbach singled him home, and Andrew Parker's solo home run made it 2-0 in the top of the first. New Orleans tied the game in the second and the game remained 2-2 until the seventh. Two consecutive hit-batsmen loaded the bases for Baltimore.
Joshua Wood was brought in to pitch for NORD, and induced a perfect double-paly ball, but it was dropped by the second baseman, allowing a run to score. The Orioles were just getting started, and they shock the Boosters with 12 runs in the inning to take a 14-2 lead. New Orleans went down without a run in the bottom of the seventh which ushered in the mercy-rule.
Flood City 5 - Rail City 3
"It wasnâ' a pretty win today, as far as offensive goes," said Delweld manager Chris Delsignore. "We left a lot of runs out there, but we'll take the win. They have some good young ball players over there and they gave us a game today."
Delweld eliminated Logan Beverage at the Point Stadium despite struggles at the plate. The Johnstown squad opened a 3-1 lead after four innings. In the sixth, the Logans appeared to tie the game on a sacrifice fly to center field. However, Delweld appealed at third that the runner had left too soon, and the umpire agreed, erasing what had been the tying run and ending the inning.
"He clearly left a little soon, so we tried the appeal," said Delsignore. "That's the advantage of having four umpires out there. We got the call and got the momentum from there and I think that got some of the wind out of their sails." The Rail City club saw the play a little differently.
"That appeal at third was definitely a game changer because that would have tied the score," said Logan Beverage manager Joe Faretta. "There's no way that our runner left early, but that's baseball--you move on."
"I felt our kids played really solid here, but you can't give up eight walks to a good team like Delweld because you're going to pay the price and that's what happened," said Faretta. The last-minute Rail City club may have been the youngest in the tournament as the roster included only 2 college players with 7 high school seniors, 1 high school junior, and 5 incoming college freshman.
The loss eliminates Rail City from the tournament. Flood City moves on to play Johnstown in the tournament's second intracity clash tonight at 6:00pm at the Point Stadium.
Cleveland 6 - Altoona 5
In the grudge match, Cleveland scored in the first and Altoona tied in the third. The teams exchanged 2 more runs and the game was tied 3-3 after 9 innings. The Blizzard from Cleveland pulled ahead in the 10th and prevented Altoona from catching up, winning 6-5 in ten innings. Cleveland wins the lower bracket and will face fellow-undefeated Baltimore tomorrow. Altoona drops into the losers' bracket and will play New Orleans.
New York 8 - Youngstown 7
New York opened up a 3-run lead in the first, but the Ohio Glaciers responded in the second. Three run-scoring singles and a bases-loaded walk put the Glaciers on top. They added two more to increase the lead to 6-3 after 2 innings.
The Long Island Astros added runs in the fourth and fifth. In the ninth, Anthony Mazella hit a homer run to make it 7-6. Zach Badanes then hit a two-run homerun of relief pitcher Ian Kelly to put the Astros back on top, 8-7. Badanes then pitched the bottom of the ninth to close the game. Youngstown starter Corey Hill pitched well over 125 pitches.
Livonia 13 - New Brunswick 11
After a surprising loss to Rail City on the opening day, Livonia's Michigan Cobras has responded with two wins, including Wednesday's slugfest against New Brunswick. The Cobras won 13-11 to eliminate the Matrix and will advance to play New York City. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Johnstown game on Friday night at Point Stadium.
