Delweld and Martella's in finals again
July 26, 2011 - Delweld and Martella's Pharmacy will once again battle in the Johnstown City League championship beginning on Wednesday. The winner of the five-game series will represent Johnstown as the host entry in the AAABA National Tournament beginning on August 8th. The loser of the series will also advance to the tournament and will represent the runner-up franchise.
Regular-season champion Delweld won their opening round series against Roxberry Creamery 3-1. In game one, Delweld scored 8 times in the bottom of the 7th to mercy-rule the game 10-0. They shutout the Creamery 7-0 in the second game as Roxberry committed 5 errors. Creamery stayed alive with a 8-5 victory in game 3 on the strength of 17 hits. However, the powerful Delweld team wrapped up the series with a 12-0 mercy rule victory on Monday.
Martella's Pharmacy swept their opening round against the Berkley Hills Renegades. The Pharmacists limped into the playoffs winning only 3 of their final 9 games. However, they pounded out 18 hits in game one and won 10-4. In the second game, Martella's early 5-run lead was cut to 1 as Berkley Hills scored 4 times in the bottom of the fourth, but Martella's pulled away with 5 the next inning and took game two 10-7. In the final game, lighting problems at the Point Stadium forced the teams to switch to Roxbury Park during play. After the move across town, the Renegades scored 5 runs to take a 5-2 lead. In the ninth, however, Martella's scored 4 times to earn a walk-off victory and a spot in the finals.
The championship series will play Wednesday through Friday at the Point Stadium beginning at 5:30pm each night. If necessary, games 4 and 5 will be played on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
